Though it is known today for the recent past as a detention center on the Dictatorship of 1976, the ESMA Complex was once a huge military base for the Argentine Army, built in the old lands of the Rivadavia Airport. As such, it’s a  direct example of the military architecture of the early decades of the 20th Century. with several similarities to what would next be the regional architecture of the Perón era (the famous “chalet peronista”). Other examples of this style can be seen in other neighborhoods like Agronomía or the buildings inside the Parque Centenario (translated: “Centenary Park”). Few decades later, the military government utilized the buildings of the ESMA Complex as a detention center. Some of the most iconic pictures of that era were taken in this place, some of them in the room of the Casino de Oficiales (“Officer’s Casino”). Today, they complex was reconverted into the Museum of the Memory and a new building was added to give place to the Museum of Malvinas.
